How many direct debits do you need to switch banks?
There is no single national rule. Each bank sets its own switch bonus criteria, and the number of direct debits is one of the levers they adjust.
That said, a clear pattern exists across UK offers, and being prepared for it means you never have to turn down a deal because you weren't set up in time.
The usual pattern
- Two active direct debits: by far the most common requirement.
- One direct debit: appears on some lighter-touch offers.
- Three direct debits: appears occasionally, usually on higher-value offers.
- No direct debit requirement: rare, and usually replaced by a minimum pay-in or debit card usage condition instead.
Other conditions that travel with it
Direct debits are rarely the only condition. Offers commonly combine several requirements, and you generally need to meet all of them:
- A minimum amount paid into the new account within a set window.
- A set number of debit card payments in the first month or two.
- Registering for online or mobile banking.
- Using the Current Account Switch Service rather than opening an account and moving money manually.
- Not having held an account with that bank or banking group before, or not having claimed a previous switch bonus from them.
The practical answer
Keep two or three small direct debits running on the account you switch from. That covers virtually every offer on the market without needing to react at short notice, and small direct debits cost very little to maintain.
Offers frequently run for only a few weeks. The people who consistently collect bonuses are the ones already set up when an offer appears, not the ones who start preparing after reading about it.
Common questions
- Does a standing order count as a direct debit?
- Generally no. Most switch offers specifically require direct debits, and standing orders are excluded because you control them rather than the recipient.
- What if I cancel the direct debits after getting the bonus?
- Check the offer terms. Many require the account to stay open and active for a defined period, and some reserve the right to reclaim the bonus if conditions stop being met.
